OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY

Regular therapy can help improve the morphology and function in both children and adults.

Initial Consult

Your treatment starts with an initial consult between Dr. Rahman, your referring doctor, and one of our therapists. The consult will focus on understanding your medical history and key goals from treatment.

Treatment Phase

After the initial consult, we will schedule sessions ranging from 45 to 90 minutes in duration. This will be dedicated time with our trained therapists. The doctor and therapist will regularly check in with you to discuss progress and future steps.

Treatment Outcome

At the end of the therapy sessions, we will set up a review session where we will discuss home exercise and follow-up care. The referring doctor will be provided a written report of outcome.

OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY (OMT)

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. Left untreated over time, they can impact the lifestyle of the patient and could, in some cases, lead of behavioral issues. OMT sessions are designed to be fun, intuitive, and non-invasive to ensure a high degree of compliance.

Children who could benefit OMT commonly show symptoms such as:

  • Tongue thrust

  • Incorrect swallowing

  • Prolonged pacifier use

  • Snoring and sleep apnea

  • Tongue tie

  • Incorrect tongue posture

OMT sessions can help children overcome challenges in breastfeeding, chewing, swallowing, speech, and occlusion that can arise from these symptoms. The sessions are designed to be fun and engaging so that children can actively learn tricks and exercises through participation. We also teach parents how to guide their children through at-home exercises.

While the primary focus of OMT is around children, it also shows great benefit among adults. These include:

  • Convenience of minimally invasive treatment

  • Shortening the duration of orthodontic treatment

  • Help with sleep apnea

  • Improving facial esthetics

OMT improve temporomandibular joint (TMJ) movement and facial esthetics in adults. We train our patients a series of convenient exercises that can relax the body. After the sessions are complete, you can continue the exercises from the convenience of your home. Our doctors and therapists are always available for an in-person or tele-visit to provide feedback on your progress.
